Every month I’m going to offer up opinions on the latest tunes the world wide web has to offer in a feature we’re calling New/Now/Next. This week is dedicated to the BOYS; We’ve got a UK gent with a massive US co-sign, and a NY rapper set for big things. Oh and he who needs no introduction… James Blake.
New: Parker Ighile
Parker Ighile has been working behind the scenes for some time and has probably had a hand in one of yours (or your little sisters) favorite tunes ( see Jessie J, Chipmunk and Conor Maynard). But 2012 saw a real shift, at least publicly, in Parkers world. He had two career changing cuts on Nicki Minaj’s Pink Friday album as well as on Rihanna’s most recent LP Unapologetic- and the later announced him as the first signing to her new label. 2013 is only going to bring more good fortune to the London boy with his first release “So Beautiful” exciting many. The electronic influenced cut showcases his clear ear for melody and I for one am eagerly awaiting his upcoming mixtape “Young, Dumb and 21”. Check out the visuals to “So Beautiful”.

Now: James Blake
Its been a short 2 years since James Blake released his self titled debut. But the boy is back with new single Retrograde taken from his forthcoming album Overgrown. Showcasing dare we say a more soulful sound to his previous releases- James manages to capture the same emotive feeling I’ve only ever heard from him on his covers (see“A Case Of You”or “Limit To Your Love”). Often praised for his production skills - I think people overlook just how talented the guy is vocally. Judge for yourself.

Next: Joey Bada$$
Not since Mr Ladies Love Cool James has a rappers name been so accurate. Joey Bada$$ is a 18 year old rapper who’s nod to 90’s hip hop has seen him receive high praise. With a flow familiar to us 80’s babies Joey is the latest of a new wave of New York rappers who seem set on reclaiming hip-hop’s crown from the south. Granted, theres only so long you can lean on a sound as stylized as 90’s hip-hop before the audience gets bored. But with bars as hard as Joey and age so vehemently on his side I’ve no doubt this guy is about to surprise the world. Check out the Big Krit and Smoke DZA cut. “Underground Airplay”.
