Philipp Plein "Transcends convention" with all Black SS14 Ad Campaign

Black is seemingly the new Black again. That is if this season's influx of racially diverse campaigns are anything to go by.

Following the reveal of Erykah Badu and Maria Borges fronting Givenchy's S/S 14 campaign earlier this week, Swiss label Philipp Plein keeps the ball rolling on the idea of promoting diversity in fashion advertising, casting some of the industry's most fascinating black faces to feature in their SS14 Campaign. A move that doesn't come as a surprise considering the German Designer, exclusively cast Black Models for the label's S/S 14 runway show last September.

Speaking on his decision, Plein says;

"I thrive on provocation,  going against the status quo, and avoiding the predictable. From choosing an only black cast to combining apparent opposites like  underground style with extreme luxury, my objective is to push limits and transcend convention."

And while some may argue that moves like this further promote segregation, I feel it's important for designers & casting directors to set the pace by challenging the idea that models of colour should only be viewed as tokens. Here's to hoping Ricardo Tisci & Philipp Plein aren't the only ones intending to take a stand this season, and next season, and the season after that.
