HEADS UP: Lee Daniels Upcoming Film, 'The Butler'
Black people seem to be having quite a good 2013 in the white house. Not just with Obama being inaugurated for a second term, but this effect has extended onto the big screen. First we had Olympus has fallen. Although it starred action man Gerard Butler as the lead, the film had Angela Bassett as Head of Security Services and Morgan Freeman as Commander in Chief. October will see the US release of Lee Daniels (nominated for best Director Oscar for Precious) directed "The Butler".
Based on the true story of Cecil Gains, who served as a Butler to 8 American Presidents from the 1950s-80s. His position allowed him a unique point of view as major political and racial history took place. Oscar winner Forest Whitaker takes the lead in this drama, and he is in great company. Much like The Avengers, some serious heavy weights have been assembled. The all-star cast includes Brit David Oyelowo, Cuba Gooding Jr, Nelsan Ellis, Lenny Kravitz and media titan Oprah Winfrey. They are joined by serious talent such as Robin Williams, John Cusack and Alan Rickman. There is no doubt that this has "oscar buzz" written all over it. But the proof will be in the popcorn.
