Kanye West Celebrates "College Dropout" 10 Year Anniversary
This week saw Kanye West celebrate the 10 year anniversary of his debut release “College Dropout”. It’s hard to remember a world without random Twitter rants or stage invasions courtesy of Mr West which in turn makes it easier to forget just how important he is as an artist.
Looking back to 2004 in Hip-Hop is a reminder of just how much time had passed. Jay-Z was retired people! November 2003 had seen Mr Carter release what was to be his final album "The Black Album". He had officially hung up those throwback basketball jerseys and moved on to some suit and tie ish- see "Change Clothes". Usher was the official King of the Charts with the "Confessions" album- all sparked with the Lil' Jon assisted "Crunk" record "Yeah!". And not to mention we were all still reeling from 2003's year end release of the Outkast classic album "Speakerboxx/The Love Below".
But it was Kanye who was eventually nominated for Best New Artist at the Grammy awards off of the back of the album who had people excited. It was clear to all that the producer turned rapper who had been not so quietly working behind the scenes had been studying his former boss Jay-Z and plotting exactly how to really make an impact. The album would go on to nab the best Rap Album awards at the 47th Annual Grammy awards and go on to sell over 4 million copies worldwide (and is Kanye's highest selling release in the US thus far). Producer, Written and Performed by Kanye its hard to argue with him when he tries to convince us all that he really is one of the greatest to ever do it!

Ten years later I am still the same kid from Chicago, still dreaming out loud, still banging on the door.
