SHORT FILM: Ava DuVernay - The Door
Ava DuVernay has done it again!
This week, award-winning filmmaker Ava DuVernay released her beautiful team-up with Miu Miu, a high fashion brand of women's clothing and accessories from the Prada fashion house! The team-up is a short film called 'The Door,' starring Gabrielle Union, Alfre Woodard, Adepero Oduye, Emayatzy Corinealdi, and Goapele. According to DuVernay and Miu Miu, 'The Door' is "a celebration of the transformative power of feminine bonds, and a symbolic story of life change," and I couldn't agree more!
In an unassumingly powerful short film (just over nine minutes), Ave DuVernay documents the transformative journey of a wounded woman. With every visit of a girlfriend to her front door, she slowly comes out of her slump.
The fashions of 'The Door' are just as important (and beautiful) as the subtle and nuanced performances by the actresses in the film! With each masterfully-crafted piece of wardrobe presented to Gabrielle Union's character, a piece of the hurt falls away. With each girlfriends (Oduye, Corinealdi, Goapele) arrival, we are introduced to intricately gorgeous pieces of the story, and almost nine minutes later, our protagonist has come full circle. She takes control of her strength, gathers herself together, and walks out of her home, this time alone, and fully liberated.
A beautiful moment in the film between Gabrielle Union and Alfre Woodard serves as the final "come to Jesus" moment. The two actresses silently share in a moment that caps off the necessary healing for Gabrielle's character.
Ava's beautiful film, skillfully shot by Bradford Young, featuring delicious fashions courtesy of Miu Miu, and underscored perfectly by tantalizing music is a MUST SEE! Nine minutes more than well spent!
I, as I'm sure we all are, am looking forward to more work from all involved with 'The Door.'
